BOPE: Tropa de Elite. Introduction.

The film "BOPE: Tropa de Elite" is rocking Brazil right now. Despite leaking to the internet and (more importantly) to Brazil's vast network of street DVD dealers weeks before, it hit theaters nationwide this past weekend and is breaking records.

The film's explosive success and the way it resonates with practically everybody in all corners of Brazilian society make it certain to have a profound influence on the subject it tackles: society's response to corruption, crime, and drug use.

Since BOPE's protagonists are elite Rio police who shoot drug dealers, kill for revenge, summarily execute corrupt police and freely use torture--sometimes on children--this is a very scary possibility.

The debate about the film is something the world should be involved in, so I'm going to do my best here to make that possible, both with big video files and the at-times incredible context that pops up in casual conversation and the media here. Since massive copyright infringement is largely responsible for the film's phenomenon, there's no better way to kick things off than with the torrent.

You may be interested in Daniel Alarcón's comments on the film, which were prompted by his attending the gala premiere of the film. He was likewise stunned at what he saw. Alarcón is associate editor of Etiqueta Negra and coedited the latest issue of VQR.

I appreciate your efforts.

You do realise that by uploading links to torrents of the movie, this is considered piracy. Developing countries have become the way they are partly because they're unable to grow their own economies to a point of sustainability. Brazil releases a movie. It has the potential to make money...which would remain in-country. The Brazilian film industry has very little financial support. What little earnings it makes, become diluted substantially when people stop buying the films but instead pirate them. Want to see more movies that make you think? You might want to start supporting them instead of stealing from them. It's hypocritical to the entire thesis of your blog.

Interesting premise for a blog and bravo. I wouldn't listen to the naysayers, and I am not an attorney, so don't take my advice, but I doubt it is illegal to post a link to the torrent. You aren't forcing anyone to click on it.

Also, I'm not sure how long piracy will be illegal in Brazil.

The Region 4 DVD has been released in Brazil. What is needed now are subtitle tracks in languages besides the included Spanish and Portuguese. Anyone interested in helping me make an english track?

"You do realise that by uploading links to torrents of the movie, this is considered piracy."
"alfalfa mafia", you are wrong. even respecting the laws regulating so-called intellectual "property", providing links is not piracy.

"stealing from them"
duplication of information has no cost. by downloading you do not remove the source. thus the word "stealing" is not applicable to information.

"[the profits are reduced] substantially when people stop buying the films but instead pirate them"
for most people, this is the first brazilian movie they see, "people stop buying the films" is not what happens.

Furthermore, the reason they see it is its availibility. Thus, sharing encourages interest in brazilian cinema instead of diminishing it.
